Spain has officially secured the top spot in the global rankings for digital nomads, earning recognition from two prestigious independent reports released in early 2026. The nation stood out in both a comprehensive international visa index and a major global city ranking, confirming its place as the world’s leading destination for remote professionals.
Spain Tops Global Digital Nomad Visa Report

According to the report, Spain achieved an almost perfect score of 99.67 out of 100, surpassing 63 other countries that currently offer digital nomad visa (DNV) programs. This annual report evaluates nations across 15 key indicators within six major dimensions, including visa accessibility, taxation, cost of living, internet infrastructure, quality of life, and legal transparency.
This high ranking reflects Spain’s efforts to streamline its Digital Nomad Visa system, offering up to three years of residency from the start, with easy renewals and competitive application costs—especially when processed directly within Spain.
“Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa isn’t just a document—it’s a gateway to an exceptional lifestyle,” said Javier Rivas, lead researcher of the report. “It stands out due to its legal clarity, long-term benefits, and alignment with European mobility.”
The report placed the Netherlands, Uruguay, and Canada in second, third, and fourth places, respectively. Other European nations such as France, Czechia, Germany, and Portugal also made the top 10, but none came close to Spain’s all-around performance.
Savills Index Highlights Spain’s Urban Appeal for Nomads
Spain’s dominance was further confirmed in the Savills Executive Nomad Index 2025, a separate annual study published by the UK-based real estate firm Savills. This index ranks the best cities worldwide for digital nomads, based on factors such as real estate affordability, coworking spaces, global connectivity, climate, and quality of life.
Three Spanish cities made it to the top 10:
- Malaga – Ranked 3rd
- Palma de Mallorca – Ranked 6th
- Barcelona – Ranked 7th

These cities are praised for their vibrant international communities, warm Mediterranean climates, and growing infrastructure for remote workers. With high-speed internet, coworking spaces, and a relaxed yet efficient lifestyle, Spain’s urban centers are becoming magnets for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and tech professionals alike.
Savills highlighted Malaga in particular for its “high quality of life, affordable housing, and proximity to international airports.” The city is quickly transforming into a digital innovation hub, with increased investments in tech parks and international partnerships.
A Magnet for Global Talent
The digital nomad trend continues to reshape the global workforce, and Spain is leading the charge in Europe. Its digital nomad visa, introduced in early 2023, allows remote workers to legally live and work in Spain while benefiting from a competitive non-resident tax regime, especially under Spain’s Beckham Law, which offers substantial tax breaks for foreign professionals.
The flexibility of the visa also allows holders to move freely across Spain and within the Schengen Zone, a major draw for globally mobile professionals.
For instance, a US-based web developer working remotely for an American company can now live in Valencia, enjoy a reduced tax burden, and hop on short trips to nearby countries like Italy, France, or Portugal—all while remaining legally compliant under Spanish residency laws.
Legal and Immigration Support Available
As the popularity of Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) continues to increase, demand for specialized immigration and tax-related legal services is growing accordingly.
This development is actively supported by the Barcelona digital nomad community, which facilitates access to reliable professional guidance for international professionals relocating to Spain. In collaboration with Katherine Barnes of The Visa Desk Spain, the community provides tailored consultancy services, including one-on-one consultations, in-person advisory sessions at community events, and regular monthly webinars.
These initiatives ensure that digital nomads have access to clear, up-to-date information and expert support throughout the DNV application and relocation process.
A Country Rich in Choice and Culture
Beyond the legal and economic incentives, Spain’s appeal lies in its sheer variety. Whether you prefer the coastal luxury of Marbella, the urban buzz of Madrid, the historic ambiance of Granada, or the artistic pulse of Barcelona, the DNV allows digital nomads to live and work anywhere in Spain.
With low crime rates, universal healthcare access, world-renowned gastronomy, and a culture that values work-life balance, Spain offers not just a place to live—but a lifestyle to embrace.
